Richard,

If you'd like to see a famous photographer's proof sheets get a copy 
of The Eye of Eisenstaedt.  Pages 65-73 shed some light on the hit 
rate of a great photographer.  This book is also a good read and 
some of the pictures were taken with a Leica.
