Subject: Which Way is Up

Ted wrote recently about his experience with forgetting how to use his =
camera (R8).

It happened to me yesterday as well. I was out in the rural Ontario =
countryside at dawn shooting a small lake shrouded in mist. The light =
was changing by the second and the composition was perfect. My big =
concern was exposure - the combination of ground fog, deep shadows and =
rays of sunlight breaking through from time to time made it extremely =
difficult to gauge exposure.

Even though I've been using my Contax RTSIII for quite some time, I blew =
it. At first I didn't notice that the in-camera display was flashing, =
and when I did I forgot what it meant - so I just kept on shooting and =
bracketing.

Most of a roll later, as the magic moment of light had passed, I =
realized that the flashing meant that AE lock had been activated. I'd =
bracketed exposure like crazy but in the end al the exposures were the =
same. 30 years of experience as a pro and artist and it can still =
happen.

Fortunately, the exposure which it had accidentally lock on wasn't to =
bad. A bit of work in Photoshop and I think I can salvage it.

To keep this on a Leica note, if I'd been using something as simple as =
an M6 this never would have happened. But, no 180mm and motor on the M6 =
:)
