I shoot a lot of fast-moving sports with Nikons, and my money lens is the 500 F4P manual focus. With patience, anticipation, practice and luck you can do just fine with manual focus. Lots of mighty good pictures have been made with it. That said, though, I am impressed with the latest generation of autofocus from C and now N. Their AF is pretty universally accepted for those applications now, and that means the competition gets even tougher. I sometimes hedge now by shooting with a 300mm AF on one body and my 500 mf on the other. Sounds ridiculous, I know. I love the sharpness, sparkle and everything else of the Leica lenses, and usually have an M on my shoulder at the same time. I have no doubt the R's optics are just as terrific. The range of lenses, and their price, is just an overwhelming factor in favor of the Nikons for me. But Ted, I'd like one of those R8s when you win that lottery, and I'll join your club too.
