Ted: Thanks for your advice.  I'll try both metering methods...or, all 
three, ( ! ), and let you know how it works out.  Acutally, for 
amateurs who don't shoot all that many rolls of film, it sometimes 
takes some time until one accumulates enough experience to really have 
a feel for a given camera and its' idiosyncracies.  I must say though, 
that, after being a confirmed M fan, the features of the R8 such as 
the viewer, easier focusing for us of more advanced age, and the 
metering, are a pleasant surprise.
