If the exposure was indeed at 1/50th, then I don't think the vertical white band occurred due to a piece of debris catching on the shutter for the following reason: if he was shooting at 1/50th, the sync speed, or lower, this means the second curtain won't be released until the first has completely traversed the film gate (the second curtain cannot be released sooner in this case because otherwise the complete width of the film frame wouldn't be exposed during a flash). Now, he mentioned that the frame was exposed normally except for the white band. This means that the first and second curtains did release and travel properly during the exposure. A piece of debris catching on one of the curtains or in the shutter mechanism may have either reduced or prolonged the exposure, but the effect would be seen across the entire frame - it couldn't cause an overexposure in a 1mm band. Suppose a faster shutter speed was used for the two problem frames - this would mean the two curtains were travelling together, with some fixed gap between them. In that case, some debris may retard the release or travel of the second curtain enough to cause overexposure in a vertical band. Has the film already been mounted? If there's a proof sheet, it wouldn't hurt to check to see if the film around the sprocket holes is intact. - -Dave
