It changes the lens diaphragm from automatic (arrow horizontal) to manual
(arrow vertical.) If you use the self timer, you must use the manual
setting as your finger won't be pressing the shutter release during the
exposure, which stops down the diaphragm. If you don't use the manual
diaphragm setting with the self timer, you will always be shooting at full
aperture.
