The shutter release is extremely quiet, much more so than the > M6. I was thinking perhaps this camera may also be considered for candid > photography (in the rain possible). Is there any explanation for the > quietness of the Nikonos as compared to the M- leica?? I too own a Nikonos V. While the shutter of this camera is quiet, to my ears it's still not in the same league as my M-3. But to answer your question, I think the Nikonos's quietness can be attributed to it's sealing and robust construction. This camera is designed to be used at depth of 160 feet. The associated water pressure at this depth demands the use of an extremely heavy-duty body which has got to help dampen the shutter. The use of thick rubber O-rings probably helps too.
