anyone who is active on the newsgorups (as i am) knows that this is
the wrong way to go for the LUG.

there are two problems:

1) unless the newgroup is moderated, everyone and his cousin will
intrude  with irrelevant posts, from Make Money Fast to sex ads.
if it is moderated, some one person will have to  deal with all the
extraneous material. anyone willing to volunteer? i thought not. also,
it is not that hard to defeat the moderation constraints.

2) every post will be snatched by the newsgroup searching programs,
and the email addresses of everyone posting will be added to the
mailing lists used for unsolicited  commercial/bulk email. everyone
who posts will then have to set up complex mail filtering schemes to
protect their mailboxes. (i know - i have a 35k byte filter currently
employed to reduce spam to a tolerable level.)
