Both the second and the third generation Summicron focus to 70cm. Being of
a more symmetrical optical design than the first generation the image
quality at distances less than 2 meters is better than with the first
generation (or the DR, which is also a first generation optic).
The close focusing range is independent from the distance the rangefinder
can accurately measure. The M3 has a rangefinder mechanism which allows
measurements till 1m. The M4, M2, M5 and M6 allow measurements till 70cm.
Putting a modern Summicron (2. or 3 G.) on an M3 gives you two
possibilities: rangefinder coupling till 1m and manual
adjustment/measurement or guessing till 70cm.
Only the Summilux (old and new) and the Noctilux focus till 1m on any M body.
