Subject: the Leica of...

Among the topics raised among the LUG digests which I received over Chris=
tmas
and only recently read, was one which asked members to nominate other pro=
ducts
which they felt represent 'the Leica of...' a particular field.

Although there were very few replies, I must admit to being intrigued at =
the
number of possibilities, and thought I might offer up a few of my own to =
get the
ball rolling.

To me, the Leica M represents all that's best in photography in the sense=
 that
it rejects unnecessary gizmos in favour of compactness, ruggedness and th=
e best
possible quality of result. It's also a distinctive design, somewhat time=
less
but ultimately functional rather than self-consiously retro, and European=
=2E

Other products which embody this philosophy for me include:

, Pashley Tube Rider bicycle (UK) - remarkably strong but stylistically s=
imple
frame design, rugged five-speed internal hub gears and hub brakes front a=
nd
rear. Ultra-comfortable traditional sprung leather saddle. Virtually
indestructible, lasts for ever, great to ride. Yours (in the UK - not sur=
e if
it's exported) for UKP400.

* Fisher Futura pen (Germany) - lightweight titanium contruction, Space P=
en-
style ink cartridges which work upside down, on greasy surfaces etc. UK P=
rice
=FA27.50.

* Junghans Mega Solar Ceramic watch - re-sets itself to *precisely* the r=
ight
tie every night by listening out for the international time signal radio =
signal.
Face doubles as a solar panel so it will never stop due to a flat battery=
=2E Black
ceramic case is very strong yet exceptionally light. UKP450.

Anyone else want to nominate their favourites?
