If it's anything like the UK, it's driven more by the availability of  
certain lenses which were aimed squarely at the press photographer. The 
35mm-350mm Canon zoom is almost universal.

I joined the UK press pack for an event a few weeks ago (something I've 
avoided for more than 10 years) and my arrival with an F2 & F3, complete 
with fixed focus lenses produced a reaction similar to that which I would 
have expected if I'd turned up with a Speed Graphic.
