Any scientific supply house or surveying equipment firm will sell you a small, light, portable rangefinder, either optical or laser. The cost will be between $50 and $25,000, so take your pick of the features your lifestyle, and budget, allow! Many camera manufacturers made handy-dandy rangefinders. The Leica ones are okay, but I agree the image is generally too dark and the most of these, in any event, are too dark. A Voigtlander Proximeter can be had for $35 or so in this country, and these are quite good, and more than accurate enough for normal use on a 200mm or 280mm lens.
