Gads.  There are gazillion of these things around.  Any scientific supply
house or surveying equipment firm will sell you a small, light, portable
rangefinder, either optical or laser.  The cost will be between $50 and
$25,000, so take your pick of the features your lifestyle, and budget, allow!

Many camera manufacturers made handy-dandy rangefinders.  The Leica ones are
okay, but I agree the image is generally too dark and the most of these, in
any event, are too dark.  A Voigtlander Proximeter can be had for $35 or so
in this country, and these are quite good, and more than accurate enough for
normal use on a 200mm or 280mm lens.
