I work near the NYC store, and stop by every so often. They are incredibly friendly, will let you handle anything they have in the store (I was in today, actually, and got to play with the Nikon F5, and a titanium M6 with titanium 35 f1.4 asph. both quite nice - and untouchable at almost every other store I've been to, besides Tamarkin, but including the much vanuted B&H). I've never had to call for an appointment, though. I usually deal with Victor in NYC, but I've found the entire shopping experience (no matter with whom) to be very positive.
