Ansel Adams created the Zone System as a practical application of
fundamental sensitometric principles. In his three volume series on basic
photography, from _The Camera_ to _The Negative_ to _The Print_, he
discussed roll film applications of the Zone System. His intention was to
make sensitometry accessible and useable in an intuitive manner.
Tailoring development to each frame of roll film is not practical, as you
point out, but this is only one aspect of what Adams considered the Zone
System to be. When Adams wrote the chapter on the Zone System in the copy
of the Leica Manual sitting on my bookshelf he clearly intended his
techniques to be applicable to roll film!
