Condensed explanation:
The R series are single lens reflex cameras, the M series are
rangefinder cameras; each systems takes a range of excellent lenses. The
relatively small M cameras have the ability to slip into a large pocket
with a small (35mm f2 Summicron, for example) lens or a collapsible lens
on the body. They are very simple to operate, don't make much noise and
are good for discreet photography. The lens range for the M cameras
without using a reflex focusing device is 21- 135mm. Some of the M
lenses are really very small and fairly light. The R cameras are
relatively big and noisy and the corresponding lenses can be a lot
bigger and heavier- comparing the size of the 35/f2 Summicrons in both
systems is like comparing a pea to a potato- well nearly. The R lenses
include macro, fisheye, perspective control and zoom lenses. I use the
M6 a lot because I do a lot of photography indoors or in low light, and
without a mirror bouncing around causing vibration I feel I can hand
hold the camera at slower shutter speeds. It is also a very
unintimidating camera for photographing people with, and I find that
usually people forget I'm taking pictures of them as they associate
having pictures taken with mirror noise, motor noise, and a large
camera. I also like to go out with an M camera in a jacket pocket and a
couple of lenses in the other pocket. I feel relatively safe that way!
The R system is great for all sorts of things, including things that are
impossible or relatively difficult with a rangefinder. I find I use it
for almost anything, but lately I particularly like to use an R body
with both an Angenieux 70-210 zoom and the 60mm Macro-Elmarit for a lot
of very closely-framed stuff. If you are curious it might be interesting
and informative to get the Leica catalogues for both M and R systems;
any Leica dealer should be able to supply them for you.
