   The R3 is a fine camear. It has selective metering with memory, aperture
   preferred, and the selector for spot and averaging is independent, so you
   could use averaging with manual, not possible with subsequent R cameras.

You're forgetting the mechanical cameras -- the R6 and R6.2, being
mechanical, have no automatic modes and just as one might expect, you
can use integral (averaging) metering in manual mode on them.

I wonder whether the reason you can't do averaging metering on the
automatic R cameras from the R mode on is that they ran out of
positions for the mode switch.  One position has to be used to move
the little lens that modifies the measurement area for the meter, and
I believe this is done with a mechanical linkage from the mode switch
on all of these cameras.
