Subject: R and M lenses comparable?

A question for Leica SLR experts:

In general, do Leica SLR lenses yield the same results that can be obtained
with the corresponding M lenses? I am thinking in particular of the M 50
f/2 (Summicron): leaving aside recent discussions about grades of
excellence among the various versions of this lens, will the 50 Summicron R
produce the same outstanding results on the film (very sharp when in focus,
and very smooth in out-of-focus areas)?

The other R lenses that would be of interest would be the 35 Summicron and
90 Summicron or Elmarit: are they also comparable to their M counterparts
in terms of optical results?

Many thanks for your thoughts.
