I just tried the wobble-test with the nearest thing I've got, which is a 28-70 Vario- Elmar (also a dual helicoid), and the play in it is so minute that it's inconsequential, and I only noticed it when I was looking for it- and it has no effect on the image in the viewfinder whatsoever. I doubt if the movement that is bothering the original poster is as slight as this, because I don't think it would have been noticed if it was. I think if this was me, with a noticeably wobbly 35-70, I'd return the lens while I still had the chance, and look for another. -- joe b.
