It still doesn't sound quite right to me somehow. I just tried the
wobble-test with the nearest thing I've got, which is a 28-70 Vario-
Elmar (also a dual helicoid), and the play in it is so minute that it's
inconsequential, and I only noticed it when I was looking for it-  and
it has no effect on the image in the viewfinder whatsoever. I doubt if
the movement that is bothering the original poster is as slight as this,
because I don't think it would have been noticed if it was. I think if
this was me, with a noticeably wobbly 35-70, I'd return the lens while I
still had the chance, and look for another.
