The 50mm does not have less "distortion" than the 35mm when trying to do portraits. Perspective is just a little more normal when you are a few more feet away from the subject than you are likely to be with a wide angle lens. The lens is not distorting. Lens distortion is an entirely different issue. People (and everything else) look strange and different when you put a lens closer than 3-4 feet away. And wide angle lenses let you get very very close, thereby "distorting" things all the more.
