If you've got flaky electronics, it is MOST PROBABLY a contact problem.
The contact involved may be easy to find (clean the battery and its contacts)
or hidden (one of the numerous mechanical switches) but that's always the
first thing to try.

One of the first things I learned as an electrical engineer was that if
it's a problem, whether in a toaster or a microprocessor, check the 
contacts first.
