Meanwhile, here in Carlsbad, California, we have unseasonably warm
weather.

The National Weather Service predicts a high of 75?F (24?C) midafternoon
December 25.
My wife has asked me to turn on our pool heater the night before, so we
can go in the pool that day. I told her it would cost $150 to $200 to
heat the pool for one day. She pointed out that is less than the meat
cost for dinner that day.

I remember several decades ago being told that heating Canterbury
Cathedral for Christmas services cost ?500 per hour. Given the heating
cost situation in the UK it is probably twice or thrice that now.
